Both sides are home this week taking on Old Gravesendians.
This week shapes up to be an exciting weekend of rugby with the 1st XV coming off the back of two bonus point wins and the 2nd XV narrowly missing out last week.
Head coach Dom Saunders had this to say.
How do you think the season has started for you?
It’s been a great start to the league season for both sides. The 1st XV are ten points out of a possible ten and the 2nd XV missed out by a score against a very good TJ’s side at the weekend. At the start of preseason we would definitely have taken it, but the group has moved forward and there is still some frustration in camp that although we have two wins we are still not doing enough of what we want to do in both attack and defence. From a coaches perspective its pleasing that the guys are taking accountability and recognising there is still so much more to be done, but these things don’t just happen by fluke and the guys are beginning to realise its the hard yards on the training ground that will allow us to play how we want to.
Having used 22 players in the opening two weeks how do you rate your depth in the squad?
In a strange way I’m delighted to have used twenty two players, it shows that our squad depth is increasing and that we have a strong group of players who are capable of not just playing but excelling at this level. Obviously it would be nice to name the same eighteen week in week out but injuries and availability take its toll, as well as players putting their hands up in training. I think last year we become stuck with a lack of player depth but a lot of the guys have gone away and worked really hard on their game to close that gap. I think even in the second team last week we had five guys who had played 1st XV rugby last year so the depth is definitely there we just need to keep everyone fit!!
Old Gravesendians are coming off the back of two bonus point wins, what challenge does that pose?
We are under no illusions of the threat that Old Gravesendians are bringing this week. You don’t stay unbeaten through pre-season and the league for nothing. I was lucky enough to watch one of their games and was very impressed by what I saw and the job Andy Miller is doing with his squad down there and I’m not surprised at all by their strong start. I fully expect them to be competing for promotion by the time April comes around. But as a squad we will focus on what we can control and I’m sure if we stick to what we do well we can get something out of the game. Whatever happens having both teams at home offers another great club day for the players and I’m sure they are looking forward to the challenge.
